JULY IS THE MONTH OF HONORING WITH SPECIAL DEVOTION
THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS
The Litany of the Most Precious Blood pays tribute to the blood our Lord both shed for us in His Passion and offers us in the Eucharist for our salvation.
It is important to remember that the host we consume at Mass is indeed the body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ! (Although the wine at communion is “my blood of the new covenant” as our Lord put it at the Last Supper (Mark 14:24) the host as the body of Christ contains our Lord’s blood as well.)
The Litany of the Most Precious Blood was approved for public use in 1960 by Pope John XXIII, although devotion to the Precious Blood goes back centuries. Indeed, as Father Faber wrote in 1860 “the lives of the saints are replete with devotion to the precious blood.” The month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood in the Church’s Liturgical Calendar.
When the Litany of the Most Precious Blood is prayed publicly, the congregation’s responses to a leader are given in italics below.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.Christ, hear us.
Christ, graciously hear us.
God, the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us.
God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us.
God, the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us.
Holy Trinity, One God, have mercy on us.
Blood of Christ, only-begotten Son
of the Eternal Father, save us. (after each line)
Blood of Christ, Incarnate Word of God,
Blood of Christ, of the New and Eternal Testament,
Blood of Christ, falling upon the earth in the Agony,
Blood of Christ, shed profusely in the Scourging,
Blood of Christ, flowing forth in the Crowning with Thorns,
Blood of Christ, poured out on the Cross,
Blood of Christ, price of our salvation,
Blood of Christ, without which there is no forgiveness,
Blood of Christ, Eucharistic drink and refreshment of souls,
Blood of Christ, stream of mercy,
Blood of Christ, victor over demons,
Blood of Christ, courage of martyrs,
Blood of Christ, strength of confessors,
Blood of Christ, bringing forth virgins,
Blood of Christ, help of those in peril,
Blood of Christ, relief of the burdened,
Blood of Christ, solace in sorrow,
Blood of Christ, hope of the penitent,
Blood of Christ, consolation of the dying,
Blood of Christ, peace and tenderness of hearts,
Blood of Christ, pledge of Eternal Life,
Blood of Christ, freeing souls from purgatory,
Blood of Christ, most worthy of all glory and honor,
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world,
Spare us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world,
Graciously hear us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world,
Have mercy on us.
V. Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord, in Thy Blood.
R. And made us, for our God, a kingdom.
Let us pray:
Almighty and eternal God, Thou hast appointed Thine only-begotten Son the Redeemer of the world and willed to be appeased by his blood. Grant, we beg of Thee, that we may worthily adore this price of our salvation and through its power be safeguarded from the evils of the present life so that we may rejoice in its fruits forever in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Litany of the Most Precious Blood gives us a poignant reminder of not only the Passion but also of the good our Lord’s Blood can do for us as the “Eucharistic drink and refreshment of souls” at Mass as well.
St. Peter reminds us of its importance of when he writes. “You were redeemed not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19). As our Lord Himself said, His blood would be shed for “the forgiveness of sins” (Matt 26:28).
May the Litany of the Most Precious Blood inspire you in your efforts to receive Him worthily in Communion and to have Him fortify you in your efforts to serve Him and others on your journey towards Eternal Life!
PRAY THE ROSARY EVERY DAY FOR PEACE IN OUR TIMES AND FOR THE SALVATION OF SOULS… THE ROSARY IS A POWERFUL WEAPON AGAINST THE EVIL ONE AND AS A GARDEN OF INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS SITTING WITH OUR LADY AND MEDITATING ON THE MYSTERIES OF OUR LORD’S LIFE, DEATH AND RESURRECTION. Each Set of Mysteries contains 5 decades of Ave’s each prefaced by the Our Father and ended by the Gloria to the Holy Trinity:
JOYFUL MYSTERIES- THE ANNUNCIATION. THE VISITATION TO ST. ELIZABETH. THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD. THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD IN THE TEMPLE. THE FINDING OF THE CHILD JESUS IN THE TEMPLE.
SORROWFUL MYSTERIES- OUR LORD’S AGONY IN THE GARDEN. THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR. THE CROWNING WITH THORNS. THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS. THE CRUCIFIXION.
GLORIOUS MYSTERIES- OUR LORD’S RESURRECTION. THE ASCENSION INTO HEAVEN. THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY INTO HEAVEN. THE CORONATION OF OUR LADY AS QUEEN OF HEAVEN AND EARTH.
POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II ADDED THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES FOR MEDITATION ON THE MINISTRY OF OUR LORD:
LUMINOUS MYSTERIES- OUR LORD’S BAPTISM BY JOHN IN THE JORDAN RIVER. THE MIRACLE AT THE WEDDING FEAST OF CANA. THE SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL. THE TRANSFIGURATION ON MT. TABOR. THE INSTITUTION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST.
HOW TO PRAY: Begin with the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
then pray the Our Father, 3 Hail Mary’s and 1 Gloria. Then pray an Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Gloria for each meditation. Think of the subject while praying and let the meaning of the subject of the decade inspire and teach you. After the 5 decades are said, pray the Hail, Holy Queen, the Ending Prayer, and Prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, usually an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Gloria. (The Fatima Prayers may be added at the end of each decade, after the Gloria).
OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. AMEN.
HAIL MARY, FULL OF GRACE, THE LORD IS WITH THEE. BLESSED ART THOU AMONG WOMEN AND BLESSED IS THE FRUIT OF THY WOMB, JESUS. HOLY MARY, MOTHER OF GOD, PRAY FOR US SINNERS, NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH. AMEN.
GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, TO THE SON AND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT, AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW AND EVER SHALL BE, WORLD WITHOUT END. AMEN.
FATIMA PRAYERS: “O MY JESUS, FORGIVE US OUR SINS, SAVE US FROM THE FIRES OF HELL; LEAD ALL SOULS TO HEAVEN, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN MOST NEED OF THY MERCY.”
“COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME BY MEANS OF THE POWERFUL INTERCESSION OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, YOUR WELL-BELOVED SPOUSE.”
HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, MOTHER OF MERCY, OUR LIFE, OUR SWEETNESS AND OUR HOPE, TO THEE DO WE CRY, POOR BANISHED CHILDREN OF EVE, TO THEE DO WE SEND UP OUR SIGHS, MOURNING AND WEEPING IN THIS VALLEY OF TEARS; TURN THEN, MOST GRACIOUS ADVOCATE THINE EYES OF MERCY TOWARDS US AND AFTER THIS OUR EXILE, SHOW UNTO US THE BLESSED FRUIT OF THY WOMB, JESUS. O CLEMENT, O LOVING, O SWEET VIRGIN MARY, PRAY FOR US, O HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, THAT WE MAY BE MADE WORTHY OF THE PROMISES OF CHRIST.
LET US PRAY: O GOD WHOSE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON BY HIS LIFE, DEATH AND RESURRECTION HAS PURCHASED FOR US THE REWARDS OF ETERNAL LIFE, GRANT THAT BY MEDITATING ON THESE MYSTERIES OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, WE MAY IMITATE WHAT THEY CONTAIN AND OBTAIN WHAT THEY PROMISE THROUGH THE SAME CHRIST OUR LORD. AMEN.
*SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM: WE FLY TO THY PATRONAGE, O HOLY MOTHER OF GOD; DESPISE NOT OUR PETITIONS IN OUR NECESSITIES, BUT DELIVER US ALWAYS FROM ALL DANGERS, O GLORIOUS AND BLESSED VIRGIN. AMEN.
*ST. MICHAEL PRAYER: ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, DEFEND US IN BATTLE. BE OUR PROTECTION AGAINST THE WICKEDNESS AND SNARES OF THE DEVIL. MAY GOD REBUKE HIM WE HUMBLY PRAY AND DO THOU, O PRINCE OF THE HEAVENLY HOST, BY THE POWER OF GOD THRUST INTO HELL SATAN AND ALL THE EVIL SPIRITS WHO ROAM THROUGH THE WORLD SEEKING THE RUIN OF SOULS. AMEN.
DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION: Pray the Chaplet every day during the 3:00 PM Hour, the hour our Savior died on the cross for you and for me and opened the floodgates of Divine Mercy from Heaven. Prayers may be said on rosary beads:

“BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL FOR THEY SHALL OBTAIN MERCY…” Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapter 5, verse 7
The Corporal Works of Mercy are kind acts by which we help our neighbor with their physical and material needs–
FEED THE HUNGRY, GIVE DRINK TO THE THIRSTY, CLOTHE THE NAKED, SHELTER THE HOMELESS, VISIT THE SICK, VISIT THOSE IN PRISON, BURY THE DEAD.
The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion by which we assist our neighbor with their spiritual and emotional needs— COUNSEL THE DOUBTFUL, INSTRUCT THE IGNORANT, ADMONISH SINNERS, COMFORT THE AFFLICTED, FORGIVE OFFENSES, BEAR WRONGS PATIENTLY, PRAY FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD.
PRAYER REQUESTS: PLEASE PRAY FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS AROUND THE WORLD! PRAY FOR THEIR HOPE AND COURAGE AND STEADFASTNESS UNDER THE TERRIBLE STRESS OF ONGOING SUFFERING AND PERSECUTION! MAY GOD GRANT THEM RELIEF AND GUIDANCE IN THESE DAYS AND MAY HE KEEP US FAITHFUL IN PRAYERS AND INTERCESSION FOR THEM IN THEIR TRIALS!
REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM and for PEACE in the MIDDLE EAST. Pray for our enemies and ALL who persecute Christians around the world. God’s MERCY is for ALL!
PRAY FOR HOPE, FAITH, LOVE TO INCREASE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AND PEACE ON EARTH TO MEN OF GOOD WILL!
One of the ways STMS is trying to encourage families to keep up daily devotions is through setting up a HOME ALTAR to meet for daily prayers and devotions. Any time is a good time to get started. Set up a home altar and resolve to pray the Rosary daily and other devotions, including prayers for the sick and the suffering.
